Charlestown Yoga Teachers
Sue Lynch, Studio Owner Sue was drawn to yoga when she began seeking out a place to develop her spirituality and sense of community. In addition to taping into the spiritual aspect of her yoga practice, Sue discovered the benefits of her yoga practice included a vigorous physical workout and a clear and balanced mind.
As an attorney and an officer in the Judge Advocate General Corp (JAG) in the U.S. Army Reserves, she experienced the effects of PTSD after returning from the Gulf War in 1991. Yoga was instrumental in her recovery from PTSD and her ability to handle a second deployment to Kosovo in 2005. Sue is the Executive Director of There & Back Again, a reintegration wellness program for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. She received her 200 hour yoga certification from Finding Inner Peace. Sue also studies with Arthury Kilmurray (www.mysticriveryoga.com), Annie Hoffman (www.artsoulyoga.com). She has received training in Integral Yoga Therapy with Joseph Le Page and iRest (level 1) with Richard Miller.
Karen Fabian Karen started practicing yoga after many years of participating in traditional fitness using running, weight training and other group classes to stay fit. She is an active competitive runner and completed her first half marathon in May, 2007 and second in October, 2008. “Running and yoga are the perfect complements to each other. They both have meditative aspects as well as great fitness benefits. But where running can tighten muscles and joint systems, yoga opens these up and balances out the body.”
After attending Baron’s Level 1 Teacher Training, she realized that teaching yoga was really what she wanted to do for a living. After a period of planning, she transitioned from her corporate life taught full time for three years starting in 2003. Karen was the first Certified Baptiste Yoga teacher and continues to teach regularly. She returned to her corporate career in September 2007 and now teaches as an adjunct to a corporate career. “Finding balance in life is critical to health and wellness and finding a way to integrate teaching yoga, practicing yoga and working full-time in the corporate arena is a true exercise daily in how to find balance.”
Karen has an undergraduate physical therapy background and a degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from Boston University and a Masters in Health Care Administration from Simmons College. Karen has worked with head injured individuals as a clinical social worker, the health insurance industry, Managed Care consulting and a HR consulting firm. She also has a fitness background and has taught in health clubs as a group fitness instructor. She also created a personal chef business, The Main Dish and has cooked for some notable Bostonians. She has found that teaching is her true calling and purpose in life; it provides her with an ideal way to tap into both her spiritual and physical energy and help others access theirs as well. Karen lives in Charlestown and taught classes at Charlestown Yoga when it first opened. She is happy to be back in the studio helping bring yoga to the residents of the neighborhood. Her personal website is www.poweryoga-boston.com
Jean-Bernard Lazaro Build around a Vinyasa (flowing practice) backbone Jean-Bernard classes are vigorous and challenging, mixing tradition and creativity. The open level concept gives to each student from beginners to more advanced practitioners the opportunity to enter asanas (postures) at different levels according to where they are in their practice. It is recommended to rest whenever needed and to let aside any competitive mind. Jean-Bernard sees yoga as a way to become a human being and sees the body as the most outer part of the brain. During the practice breath is a key point to monitor the relation of the body with the mind. Nurturing the entire self adequately through the use of breath, asanas and concentration produces a powerful practice, which in turn brings peace and joy.
Keri McIntosh Keri McIntosh is a certified hatha and prenatal yoga instructor and a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with the Yoga Alliance. Keri was introduced to yoga in 2000 and has been captivated by its transformational effects ever since. In 2003 she began studying with Debbie Cohen of Core Yoga and completed her 200-hour Registered Yoga Certification in 2004. Influenced by a variety of styles, Keri creates a welcoming environment for all to participate. Her classes help students find harmony between movement and stillness, strength and flexibility, resilience and surrender as she guides them through poses in a safe and heartfelt way. She emphasizes the joy of being alive within the body and creating a deeper sense of awareness to the true Self.
Keri has completed an additional 200-hour training with Judy McClain of Grace Yoga and further trainings with David Magone of PranaVayu Yoga and Janice Clarfield of Urban Yoga. She is grateful to many other inspiring teachers along the way.
BACK BAY YOGA
Nicoline Valkenberg As a Vinyasa Yoga practitioner and teacher, Nicoline approaches her Yoga practice as embracing a state of flow. Our inner world is in constant flux, where our own desires, needs and impulses are a moving river. We often resist the natural flow of life within and around us. For Nicoline, Vinyasa is the practice of jumping into the river and moving with its currents. By becoming more fluid in our bodies, she's come to know that we can learn to move with the flow of life, and enjoy the ride!
Influenced by both Vinyasa Yoga and alignment-based approaches, Nicoline's classes are a unique blend of expressive flow and technique. By utilizing both dynamic movement and more methodical work of asana, her aim is to cultivate more integrated patterns of movement, and a more embodied sense of Self. As an avid music fan, her classes incorporate an eclectic selection of uplifting and inspirational music to enhance the collective energy of the group experience.
Nicoline first became certified to teach through the 200 hour Kripalu teacher training led by Yoganand Michael Carroll. She has since drawn her inspiration from study and training with Shiva Rea, and Barbara Benagh.
NORTHEND YOGA
Owners Alicia Orr and Alessandra Miele have over twelve years of combined experience as yoga students and teachers. Through workshops and trainings they have studied with world renowned teachers such as Sri K. Pattahbi Jois, Beryl Bender Birch, Nancy Gilgoff, Tim Miller, Manju Jois, Matthew Sweeney, and Anna Forrest. They are both Registered Yoga Teachers at the 200-hour level by Yoga Alliance. Alicia received her certification with Mimi Loureiro, owner of O2 Yoga, and Alessandra received hers through the Yoga Works teacher training program with Natasha Rizopoulos. Both Alicia and Alessandra share the same passion for the practice of yoga, and the endless benefits it provides for the mind and body. As long-time residents of the North End, they are thankful to have the opportunity to provide a place for those in and around Little Italy to learn and practice this ancient tradition.
DURGA YOGA STUDIO
Jen Sundeen A resident of Harvard, Massachusetts, Jennifer Sundeen recently founded The Durga Studio. Jennifer was five years old when her first teacher, Hannah Greenberg, introduced her to hatha yoga. Its connections to body and nature deeply affected a young jen and immediately found a place in her heart. Since that time she has spent her years pursuing the yogic path in many ways, returning to practice throughout her teen and college years. Over the past 10 years, she studied regularly with Ashtanga/Anusura teacher Sheila Walsh as well as rocking out to Prana Vayu with Kevan Gale. Currently, Jennifer is fully immersed in Prana Flow and training with Shiva Rea. Jennifer's amazing teachers have inspired her to impart the yogic philosphy to everyone: to find connections with all people, to cherish the earth, to live healthy lifestyles, to find beauty in the everyday moments, to rediscover the rhythms of the universe, to find the divine being that resides in all of us, and to shine who we truly are.
